Born in New York City, 15 Aug. 1814. Worked at the Manhattan Iron Works, where he learned the trades of millwright and machinist. Moved to North Carolina and superintended the erection of large cotton mills. In 1845, settled in Rochester as a member of the firm Stoddard, Freeman & Co., paper manufacturers and owners of the lower falls mills.
